What's cooking in your food system? Talking food in Klickitat and Skamania County
Gorge Grown is partnering with WSU Extension, the Klickitat and Skamania County Health Departments, the Horizons project, and more partners to conduct a Community Food Assessment in Klickitat and Skamania Counties this year.
GGFN and its community partners will work together over the course of one year to identify both community assets and needs in regards to food and farming. A Community Food Assessment is a collaborative, participatory process that examines a range of community food issues and assets with the goal of improving food security and community health and education.
Want to learn more? We want to hear from YOU about food issues and resources in your community, whether you're a farmer, consumer, health care provider, or businessperson. Come to our kickoff workshop to get more information and offer your two cents:

Class: Backyard poultry for eggs and meat
This class will cover overall poultry production including brooding chicks, housing, nutrition, predator control, raising meat birds, management of laying hens. Robin Cunningham is a local teacher and farmer. Besides her orchard and large scale produce garden, she recently added a pastured poultry operation. She has attended workshops at OSU on the subject, and traveled to Virginia to the farm of author, lecturer Joel Salatin, featured in the popular The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, the 2006 non-fiction book by Michael Pollan <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Pollan> , to see first hand how this farmer raises and processes his poultry. Kristie Gensler, a full time rancher/farmer, has 30 years experience with commercial organic meats and poultry production, breeding and dealing with many breeds, integrating a holistic practice in the barnyard.
